The Will Eisner Comic Awards are the most prestigious in the comic book industry, and within the decorated history of winners there is no greater honor than being named to the ceremony's Hall of Fame. Today, the nominees for the 2017 awards have been unveiled, alongside four creators who have earned automatic entry into the Hall of Fame.
San Diego Comic Con is without a doubt the biggest event on the industry's calendar, and people will be flying from around the world to attend panels, watch trailers, meet creators, and make friends. This year's event is bigger than ever, with so much going on every single day that it can be difficult to sift through all that information and decide how to spend your time.
With the event only days away, we've looked through the schedules and hand-selected some of the best events happening on Thursday and Friday for fans of comics, collectibles, TV and film, so you can be sure you don't miss that must-see panel or signing.
The best superhero film ever made isn't The Dark Knight. It's not the 1978 Superman. It's not even Spider-Man 2. No, the best superhero movie is 2008's Justice League: The New Frontier.
Now, you might be asking, how does a 75-minute, direct-to-video animated film beat out those other films, which are widely adored and were helmed by some of the most acclaimed directors working today? The answer is, none of those films were built around the work of the great Darwyn Cooke, who passed away this past weekend from cancer.
Of the many artistic talents to pass through DC Comics, few have as distinctive a style as Darwyn Cooke. Taking an aesthetic rooted in both Jack Kirby and 1950s magazine illustration, Cooke has carved out a distinctive identity as the artist behind such hits as New Frontier, the Catwoman original graphic novel Selina's Big Score, and The Spirit, leaving perhaps the most distinctive mark on that last character since his creator, Will Eisner.
Now until the 16th, thanks to Comixology, you get a chance to check out the vast majority of his DC Comics work, all for under $50. The marquee item here is of course New Frontier, and you can get the entire six-issue miniseries and a later one-shot for under $15. That's a great deal, but if you already have that series and you're looking for a fresh recommendation, we'd strongly suggest picking up Jonah Hex #50.

Today the 2015 Eisner nominations were announced for the awards ceremony that will take place on July 10th during San Diego Comic-Con International. There aren't a ton of surprises in this year's list --- books like Ms. Marvel, Saga, Multiversity, and Bandette led in terms of total nominations --- but as always it's good to see quality books get their due, and it was a year of positive movement in terms of gender diversity, with multiple women nominated in most major categories. We still have a ways to go, but seeing progress is a good sign.
The 2014 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards ceremony took place Friday 25th July in the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront, as part of San Diego Comic-Con. It was a good night for Saga, Hawkeye, and the Hernandez brothers. Presenters included Orlando Jones, Reginald Hudlin, Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick, Sergio Aragonés, Phil LaMarr, and Kevin Eastman. ComicsAlliance has a full list of winners, as well as the other nominees in each category.
San Diego Comic-Con International 2014 is looming just over the horizon, and that means that it's almost time for the annual Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. Today, the nominees were announced, and Image Comics led the pack with 20 nominations across all categories, including four out of five of the nominations for Best Continuing Series, with the remaining spot going to Matt Fraction and David Aja's Hawkeye at Marvel.
Also interesting to note: While there were several nominations for Vertigo titles like Trillium and The Wake, DC's "New 52" line of superhero titles was almost completely shut out, with their only nod coming from Scott Snyder's nomination for Best Writer. Check below for the whole list.
