Everyone loves comic book trivia, but with decades of comics behind, there’s always some new obscure fact to learn. That’s why ComicsAlliance is going deep into the minutiae of your favorite names in comics in our continuing video series. You think you know comics? Well, here’s a few things you might not know!

This week we are looking at Jean Henri Gaston Giraud, better known by his pen name, Moebius! Using both that name and the name Gir, Giraud proved himself the master of multiple genres of comics, including science fiction, fantasy, and Westerns. Furthermore, as a member of Les Humanoides Associes, he would be a co-founder of the incredibly influential magazine Metal Hurlant, known in the US as Heavy Metal. Nevertheless, he is probably still best known among American comics fans for drawing a Stan Lee Silver Surfer story. This video lays out many of the details of his life, from his early work to the peaks of his career, as well as his ventures into production design, storyboarding, and screenwriting for films.

Show notes:

  • You can pick up The Incal, Moebius's book with Alejandro Jodorowsky, here or digitally here.

  • Most of the rest of Moebius's work is out of print at the moment, but if you don't mind paying the price for used copies of books like Arzach and Airtight Garage, you can take a look at those here.
