Live Action ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ And Shredder Movie Designs Surface [UPDATE]

Bay as Splinter top

Since essentially the very moment that the Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was public knowledge, it's been an object of intense fan skepticism. Would the characters look weird, what with their strange new origin story? What will the CGI/live action hybrid look like in action?

Well, there are now actual images of character designs for the turtles and a heavily-armored Shredder from the Jonathan Liebesman-directed movie in their pixel-perfect glory. Judge for yourself.

James Avery, The TV Voice Of Shredder And War Machine, Dies

James Avery Obit War Machine Shredder

Many of the obituaries for actor James Avery, who died late Tuesday night at age 68, have focused on his work playing Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

And while that show was certainly Avery's most visible role, he spent decades compiling an incredibly impressive voice acting resume, providing the voices for characters including Shredder on the 1980s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series, War Machine/James Rhodes on the 1990s Iron Man and Spider-Man cartoons, and Sir Bryant on The Legend of Prince Valiant.

Villainous01

The idea of one's toys coming to life at night is a charming and utterly horrifying staple of children's stories, but here's the thing. If you're a kid who has action figures, then you don't just have spacemen and cowboys -- you have a lot of bad guys. The good guys need someone to fight, after all, so chances are pretty good that your toybox is going to be full of at least a few megalomaniacal snake-themed terrorists and probably a lot of thematic serial killers too. So what happens when they come to life? As it turns out, writer/director Paul Constantakis has the answer in a short film called Villainous.

SDCC 2013 Gets A Way Better Shredder, Plus A Casey Jones Poster

shreddersdcc2013exclusive

Much as I love the core team from Playmates' new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line, a few characters have left me cold -- namely the evil Shredder, who sports few paint applications and minimal articulation. At Toy Fair 2013, Playmates revealed a much sharper take on the Shredster that will feature a removable helmet, a righteous cape and overall improved posability - but San Diego Comic-Con 2013 attendees can snag an extra shiny version of it this July.
