Boom! Studios Unveils Its Emerald City Comicon 2014 Exclusives

Boom Studios ECCC Variants

Seattle's Emerald City Comic Con 2014 is just around the corner, and while I've been trying to figure out if I can make it to the very first Starbucks to complete my tour of original chain restaurant locations (I went to the first KFC back in 2005, there is a museum attached), the folks at Boom! Studios have been busy with a new set of variant covers! They'll be offering a handful of Emerald City exclusive covers at the show, and they're all pretty awesome.

Check below to see the roster of ECCC variants, including a Nirvana-inspired take on Adventure Time, a new look at Lumberjanes #1, a Punch-Out!! homage for Regular Show: Skips, and a new cover for The Midas Flesh #1 by Sex Criminals artist Chip Zdarsky!

North And Rugg Unleash Mecha Lumpy Space Princess In ‘Adventure Time’ #26 [Preview]

Adventure Time #26, Boom! Studios

I think it's fair to say that the characters in Adventure Time are prone to making some pretty bad decisions. I mean, just the lack of tooth-brushing that we've seen in a show set in a place called "The Candy Kingdom" alone is enough to make you shake your head at the life choices Finn and Jake have made. Next week, though, when the Eisner award-winning Adventure Time comic book hits its 26th issue, writer Ryan North and artist Jim Rugg (who is doing a full AT arc following his backup in issue #10) lead Finn and Jake to make one of the most alarmingly and obviously terrible decisions that we've see yet -- and you can get a jump start on cringing right here at CA with the preview below.

And if that wasn't enough to get to read on, then trust me when I say that for one brief panel, this issue introduces what is undoubtedly the sensational character find of 2014: MECHA LUMPY SPACE PRINCESS.

Emerald City Comicon And We Love Fine Team-Up For Exclusive Apparel With Marvel, My Little Pony, Adventure Time And More [Fashion]

Untitled-1

Offering a notably comics-specific, distinctly warm and fuzzy vibe that's not to be found at some of the massive and monstrous, comics-suppressing conventions here in the US, Seattle's Emerald City Comicon feels a lot more like comics summer camp than it does a media trade show. Comics professionals from all dimensions of the industry -- creators, publishers, press and beyond -- all look forward to ECCC for the same reasons attendees do; it's a great weekend to meet your readers, meet your favorite authors, and celebrate the medium we all love.

Also, buying cool stuff.

That same summer camp quality that makes ECCC worth attending may also make it worth commemorating, which is why it makes sense that geek fashion haus We Love Fine has made its first ever partnership with a convention with a limited edition line of t-shirts. Featuring Marvel characters like Captain Marvel, Hawkeye and Deadpool as well as other We Love Fine licenses like My Little Pony, Transformers, ElfQuest, Bravest Warriors, Adventure Time and Bee & Puppycat alongside Seattle iconography (very cute), the ECCCxWLF collection will be available exclusively for $25 each at the Seattle show from March 27-30.

You can inspect the designs below. More info at the show's merchandise page.

Marceline And Jake Venture Into The Nightosphere In ‘Adventure Time Vol. 3: Seeing Red’ [Preview]

Marceline Seeing Red
Boom! Studios

Following our lenghty interview with Adventure Time Vol. 3: Seeing Red writer (and CA guest contributor) Kate Leth earlier this month, you may have found yourself wondering just when you could read a solid chunk of the Zachary Sterling-illustrated original graphic novel. The full OGN isn't out until Wednesday, March 5, but thanks to a beefy digital deliver from Boom! Studios, today you can now check out the book's cover by Stephanie Gonzaga and ten full pages of Leth and Sterling's interiors as they chronicle Marceline the Vampire Queen's (and Jake the Dog's) latest conflict with her Nightosphere-ruling father.

‘Adventure Time: Seeing Red’ Writer Kate Leth On Marceline And Jake’s Quest For The Axe [Interview]

Adventure Time: Seeing Red, Boom! Studios

Kate Leth is a kind of comics renaissance woman: web cartoonist; retail leader; self-publisher; artist-for-hire contributing to Locke & Key, The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, and numerous projects for BOOM! Studios; and, most recently, a ComicsAlliance guest contributor. But this spring, Leth's taking on a new role. With Adventure Time: Seeing Red, the third original graphic novel based on the popular Cartoon Network series, Leth's taken on her first job writing comics -- and she's using the opportunity to take Marceline the Vampire Queen and Jake the Dog on a weekend trip to the Nightosphere.

To find out more about Leth and her new OGN with artist Zachary Sterling, we spoke to Leth about approaching comics as a critic, retailer and creator at the same time, her love of Adventure Time, and why she identifies with Marceline as "an angsty teen at heart."

Katsuhiro Otomo, Frozen, Adventure Time, Futurama and Mickey Mouse Win Top Honors at 2013 Annie Awards

Untitled-2

The competition was brutal during last weekend's Annie Awards, the International Animated Film Society's celebration of an uncommonly strong year in animation for film, television, commercials and games. For example, it stung to see our beloved Teen Titans Go! lose the award for Best Animated TV/Broadcast Production For Children’s Audience, but that the winner was the similarly excellent Adventure Time made the pill easier to swallow. But easier still was the master Katsuhiro Otomo taking home the Winsor McCay Award for lifetime achievement in animation. That pill is good for health.

Finn, Jake And The Ice King Plot A Heist In ‘Adventure Time: The Flip Side’ #2 [Preview]

Adventure Time: The Flip Side #2, Boom! Studios

One of the cool things about Adventure Time is that it lends itself really well to hopping in and out of different genres with every adventure. Sure, it's skewed pretty heavily towards dungeon-crawling action, but over the past few years, we've seen romances, crime stories, locked room mysteries, and even supernatural horror. And now, we're getting to see Finn and Jake plot a heist -- and since they're heisting a princess, why not recruit the Ice King as an expert advisor?

That's what's going down in the pages of Adventure Time: The Flip Side #2, from the team of Paul Tobin, Colleen Coover and Wook Jin Clark! Check out the first few pages, along with a whole dang bunch of variant covers, below!

Boom Announces Horizontal ‘Adventure Time 2014 Annual’ By Gibson And Dreistadt

Adventure Time 2014 Annual Cover
Boom! Studios

Since the name of Boom's Adventure Time comic book game is getting even wilder than usual on its miniseries and special issues, it's hard to say that their upcoming annual is a complete 180 from what's come before. But will turn a full 90 degrees. Seriously.

This April the Adventure Time 2014 Annual by the Tiny Kitten Teeth team of Frank Gibson and Becky Dreistadt is flipping the series horizontal for a special widescreen installment, which should help to fit in Dreistadt's fully painted take on none other than Baby Fionna and Cake.
