batgirl

As readers will know from our weekly Best Cosplay Ever feature, we’re big fans of cosplay at ComicsAlliance. The comics, sci-fi, gaming, and fantasy communities have proved time and again their exceptional talents for homemade disguises and superheroic sartorial excellence, and all of their craft and skill was on display this past weekend at HeroesCon. Our chief cosplay correspondent Betty Felon was on hand to document as much of it as she could.

Batman doesn’t do it alone. Gotham is a big city, and the Caped Crusader has called on a number of trustworthy allies and protégés to help him keep the peace. This time around, we’re putting the spotlight on one of his most popular partners: Batgirl.

With so many different personalities under the cowl over the years, it’s no wonder that cosplayers take to the character with such gusto. Batgirl is a popular go-to for fans, and a common sight on the convention floor. Each cosplayer brings their own flair to the wonderful icon that Batgirl has become; from the colorful ’60s costumes to the sleekness of the Black Bat costume, from Bette Kane to Stephanie Brown, these talented fans wear the mantle with pride. These are the best Batgirl cosplays.

Funko’s Impopsters Line Re-imagines Batman’s Rogues as the Dark Knight

Funko
Funko

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about Funko's latest Pop figure line, Impopsters (I'm also not sure about that brand name, but what do I know?). On one hand, putting some (slightly) new spins on characters that have been around for decades is cool, and it lets Funko get a little creative with the standard form bodies they've been using to create hundreds and hundreds of collectibles. But I'm also not wild about just Batmanning the Dark Knight's rogues gallery. The concept certainly makes sense though. People love Batman and his big bads, so why not combine them into one thing?

Impopsters is just the latest in a long line of Funko's attempts to shake up the game with miniature, budget vinyl collectibles. While I wonder if this was the series of collectibles Funko alluded to in the most recent Marvel Collector Corps, I'm definitely wondering what the Marvel versions of these are going to look like. Oh, that's right. Impopsters won't just be limited this Batman series. Funko apparently has designs on the rest of the DCU and Marvel Comics, too.

The Birds of Prey is a classic DC franchise that has been missing from the stands for the past couple of years, but that absence comes to an end soon thanks to the launch of Batgirl and The Birds of Prey as part of DC Rebirth. Written by Julie Benson and Shawna Benson of The CW's The 100, with art by We(l)come Back's Claire Roe, the series brings the classic team of Batgirl, Black Canary and Huntress together again for the first time in order to track down an imposter posing as Barbara Gordon's former identity, Oracle.

ComicsAlliance chatted to the Benson sisters about how they came to DC, their transition from television to comics, and the team dynamic of their Birds of Prey. Also, DC provided us with annotated design pages from Yanick Paquette and an exclusive look at character sketches by Claire Roe!

ICYMI: Frankie Charles Finally Gets A Superhero Codename In Batgirl #50, And It’s Not What You Think

Batgirl-Featured

Barbara Gordon's network of friends and allies has been an ongoing theme in the recently concluded Batgirl run by Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart and Babs Tarr. Whether it's Black Canary, Spoiler, Batwing or Bluebird, there's no way Batgirl would have been able to overcome the obstacles she overcame without a little help from her friends.

One of Batgirl's fiercest allies throughout the run has been Frankie Charles, Barbara's roommate whom she met while they were both in physical therapy together. Although Frankie still often requires assistance to walk, that doesn't stop her being an integral part of Team Batgirl, and in the most recent issue she finally got a superhero identity.
