The biggest weakness of the mostly fantastic first episode of Telltale Games' Fables prequel game,The Wolf Among Us, was one that tends to come up in prequels. It built a handful of major plot points around putting characters that show up safe and sound in Fables in seemingly mortal peril.
The second episode, titled "Smoke and Mirrors," largely avoids that pitfall by quickly dealing with the cliffhanger from the previous episode to unveil new secrets that arise more organically from the world of the game. New characters and seedy settings keep things fresh while maintaining a wonderfully noirish atmosphere. And while the gameplay is slightly different, it's still eminently compelling.
The second episode, titled "Smoke & Mirrors" hits next week and it finds lead character Bigby Wolf trying to make sense of it all while getting yelled at. A ton. Also: Jack! Check out the game's trailer (which contains some NSFW language) after the jump.
The press materials for the first episode of Telltale Games' new Fables prequel series,The Wolf Among Us, note that players who are familiar with the company's Walking Dead games will "be right at home" with the game.
As far as the controls and the gameplay are concerned, that's completely true. They're basically identical. Tonally and stylistically, though, A Wolf Among Us blazes its own trail from the very first screen. This isn't even the ensemble drama/fantasy epic that Fables itself eventually became. The Wolf Among Us, at least in its episode one, "Faith," is neon noir all the way.
As a followup to its debut trailer, Telltale Games has released a handful of new images from its new Fables prequel game, The Wolf Among Us. Two of the shots indicate lead character Bigby Wolf will be in a fightin' mood for much of the game, though the others prove he'll show his inquisitive side, too.
Now, there's a new one-minute trailer and...we still don't know a lot. But we know the game will share a cel-shaded look similar to Telltale's smash-hit Walking Dead game, that it'll be a game of "choice and consequence" also similar to The Walking Dead, and that the first episode will be called "Faith." Oh, and Bigby falls out of a window during a fight. Hit the jump for the full trailer.
Over the past few years, Telltale Games has earned a heck of a pedigree among fans of adventure games, particularly when it comes to games based on comics. Last year's episodic The Walking Dead game earned well-deserved game-of-the-year honors from a go
Out next week is Fables #126, part 2 of the storyline simply titled "Snow White." The spotlight is on Snow, as she deals with a mix of family and government issues. Meanwhile, Bigby Wolf is on a road trip with Stinky, taking driving lessons as he searches for the the missing cubs.
Following in the footsteps of a restless neighbor who stepped out in "Jack of Fables," it looks like Fabletown's baddest wolf will get a spotlight of his own in this fall's "Fables: Werewolves of the Heartland
