At a presentation to investors on Wednesday morning, Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara unveiled his studio's blockbuster movie slate for the next few years through to 2020, finally confirming the titles for an ambitious number of movies based on DC Comics superhero properties.
The announcement confirms that we will finally see a long-awaited Wonder Woman movie in 2017. Gal Gadot will reprise the role after 2016's Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice. The announcement also includes the expected Justice League movie -- and a sequel -- the previously announced Suicide Squad movie, and pictures starring Justice League members Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Cyborg. This means DC now has one superhero movie in the works with a female lead, and three with non-white leads.
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson -- actor, wrestler, guy with quote marks in his name -- has tweeted what appears to be confirmation that he will play the role of Black Adam -- presumably in a Shazam movie from Warner Bros. -- by telling his followers, "My honor to become.. #BlackAdam".
Rumors about Johnson joining the DC Cinematic Universe have circulated for a while, with initial speculation that he might appear in Batman V Superman -- perhaps as Lex Luthor. In August, Johnson confirmed that he was in talks to take on a DC role, and tweeted a picture of Shazam, Black Adam, and Superman. He didn't specify which role he was up for, but many fans noted his resemblance to the villain Black Adam.
Dwayne Johnson, better known to wrestling fans from his time in WWE as The Rock, has long been rumored to be up for a starring role in a DC Comics superhero movie, and now it looks like it's actually going to happen. In an interview with Total Film, Johnson confirmed that he has been in talks with DC Entertainment for years and that an agreement is in place and an announcement is coming soon.
As for just what that announcement will be, well, based on what Johnson says in the interview, there's a pretty good chance he might be playing Shazam in an upcoming film.
Good news for those of you who like speculating on Hollywood casting rumors with little to no information: When asked about the possibility of playing a part in a Marvel or DC Superhero movie, Dwayne "Rocky 'The Rock' Maivia" Johnson, the only person to have a starring role in both Fast & Furious 6and WrestleMania XXIX, told fans via Twitter that he had a meeting with Warner Bros. that involved DC Comics in some form or another.
Assuming that this wasn't a meeting about acquiring the rights to the mid-90s comic based on his WWE persona -- which I doubt would require the involvement of the CEO of Warner Bros. -- one assumes that it was probably about the potential for Johnson to pick up a role in an upcoming movie based on one of DC's comics. Let the speculation now commence, and continue until he's announced as Alfred in a Batman reboot that takes the franchise in an exceptionally jacked new direction.
