This week, since we're focusing on Love and Sex across the site, I thought it would be fun to cast Adam Warren's Empowered, a highly sexualized manga-influenced superhero comedy. The book's title character is a young superhero who gets her powers from an unbelievably skintight costume that has a tendency to get ripped up in battle, which often leads to her getting tied up, since she's powerless until the suit regenerates. Alongside her boyfriend, a former henchman known as Thug Boy, and her best friend Ninjette, she looks for her place in an absurd superhero world.
In 2017, Empowered is celebrating its diamond anniversary, and in addition to a tenth original graphic novel, Dark Horse is marking the occasion with a new three-issue miniseries written by Warren with art by Karla Diaz, Empowered and the Soldier of Love.
Valentine's Day weekend is upon us, and love, bad chocolate, and expensive restaurant reservations are everywhere you look. To mark the occasion, we've compiled a list of the 30 greatest couples in comics. These are the romantic pairings whose stories inspire us to believe in the power of love, and whose devotion to each other may provide a model for how to woo your own beloved when they're cloned, or possessed by evil forces, or you forget their birthday or whatever.
In today's polls: Tough love. Whether it's Jessica Jones and Luke Cage breaking through each other's tough shells, or the Baroness finding her way under Destro's skin, sometimes the best love stories happen when someone learns to let their guard down and invite someone else in. Of course, these can be high pressure relationships, especially when that special someone is the only man on the island or the last man on Earth.
Adam Warren's Empowered is one of the best superhero comics being made today. Sometimes I think Empowered might end up being one of the greatest superhero comics ever. The elements are all there: engaging characters, a plot that springs from them organically, an inventive setting, and scads of emotion. Its parodical beginnings -- based in the jokey premise of superpowered woman Empowered de-powering as her delicate, stereotypically skintight super suit gets shredded in battle -- has transitioned smoothly into a darker present, and it’s an evolution that’s been met with little in the way of fan whining for “the good old days.” Yes, Empowered is funny, surprising, moving, and original.
And it's softcore.
Shrinkwrapped, bondage-based, can't-read-it-on-the-bus softcore.
We didn't realize when we set out to list our favorite comic books of 2012 that it had been such a fun year to be a fan of the medium that we all love so much. The last twelve months offered readers a wide variety of work ranging from the most crowd-pleasing superhero epics to the most idiosyncratic of indies; the return of much missed mangaka and the emergence of exciting new talent; a new crowd-sponsored visibility for self-publishing; and the ascension of the fan artist from bedroom dreamer to Tumblr tycoon...
While other sites may be content to bring you Rocktober, Shocktober or Mohawktober, ComicsAlliance is committed to commemorating the things that really matter! That's why this month, we're bringing you 31 days of one of Empowered's lesser-known Superhomeys as we celebrate Syndablokktober...

The outfits worn by our favorite comic book characters are routinely skintight and, particularly with female characters, often quite revealing -- sometimes in the extreme. Adam Warren's longrunning and very acclaimed (by us, especially) graphic novel series Empowered takes this dubious convention of comics and runs with it to create something delightful, a sexy superhero comedy about a heroine whose hypermembrane costume becomes a major obstacle in her life; clinging embarrassingly to every contour of her body and completely falling apart whenever it feels like it...
