The United States has split into separate sovereign territories who uneasily co-exist side-by-side as population grows, food supplies decrease and the world slowly creaks towards death. Oh, and three of the four horsemen of the apocalypse have returned to usher in the end a whole lot sooner, and the one person that stands against them is their brother, Death.
That’s the premise of Jonathan Hickman, Nick Dragotta and Frank Martin’s East of West, published by Image, which has been running since 2013. It presents a very American apocalypse, as politicians plot and scheme their way through another day while the literal end of the world is right around the corner.
It's the penultimate edition of Original Spin, our exclusive beside-the-scenes examin-xploratio-tainment of Marvel's big summer crossover event, That One Before Axis, by Jason Aaron and Mike Deodato. Yes, that's right, it's the big crossover event Marvel has kind of already forgotten about because it's so busy hyping up the next crossover event! (Though Marvel hasn't quite got around to telling us what that next event is about. Something something Bizarro Red Skull Onslaught? Buy the book, kids! It has Wolverine in... oh wait no.)
Yes, Marvel has already moved on to the next thing, but we at ComicsAlliance are still here, dutifully and patiently waiting for this event to finish. Sure, this recap is a week late, but I said we're dutiful, not quick. In this issue, we find out once and for all who killed the Watcher! Mmmaybe. Maybe not. I'm not really clear on that. Red Skulls are Onslaughts now; everything is crazy. Spoilers follow!
Inexplicably cleared in the phone hacking scandal, ComicsAlliance is back with the fifth installment of Original Spin, the only Original Sin recap that... exists, maybe? We don't know! We haven't done any research. That's what makes us a name you can trust.
The Watcher is dead. Nick Fury is also dead. A bunch of disparate heroes spent four issues wandering around crime scenes before discovering they're maybe all working for Nick Fury, who isn't dead, and was maybe responsible for all those crime scenes, so.. what? The Watcher probably also won't be dead, eventually. That's the story so far. With issue #5... that's... still the story, because nothing really happened. But here's a recap anyway!
On sale next week is East Of West #6, the latest issue of Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta's sci-fi western series for Image Comics. Due to a Celestial event near the end of the Civil War, the technology of the American Frontier has been drastically advanced, but now the country finds itself teetering on the edge of disaster. As the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse attempt to kill the President of the United States, the man known as The Ranger has been recruited to hunt down and kill Death.
Image Comics has provided ComicsAlliance with a preview of East Of West #6, and you can check it out after the cut.
Though sci-fi comics have enjoyed a renaissance of late, the sci-fi western genre, if such a thing exists, is certainly not one dominating the shelves. But East Of West, the Image Comics series from Jonathan Hickman and Nick Dragotta, has been one of the more successful and celebrated new series of 2013. East Of West features an alternate history tale of a technologically advanced American frontier, due to a Celestial event at the end of the Civil War. Now the country is teetering on the edge of disaster, as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse attempt to kill the President of the United States. Hickman writes a tale that gives ample opportunity to Dragotta and colorist Frank Martin to create everything from robotic steeds to the image of the four horsemen clawing their way through dirt, bone and metal.
In issue #5 of the hit series, the contents of the apocrypha are revealed, and it may or may not predict the end of the world. East Of West #5 arrives in stores next week, and Image Comics has provided ComicsAlliance with a preview, which you can check out after the cut.
Superhero comics have with increasing frequency been turning out stories that match epic scope with epic length, with massive world-saving adventures featuring casts of hundreds covering several issue-long arcs crossing over into multiple other books with spin-offs and tie-ins...
If the current political landscape of the United States makes one thing clear, it's that certain aspects of science can polarize a populace. It often seems as though scientists are viewed less as benevolent knowledge-seekers and more as dangerous charlatans...
