For weeks, a friend of mine had been asking if I’d attend Marvel Universe Live with him. For weeks I had been saying “no,” because I had little interest in attending a two-hour production geared for kids that mainly consists of people running around in costumes on the floor of Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. The mistake I made was mentioning this to my editor, who then insisted it would be a good idea for me to attend.
Marvel Universe Live
Listen: If someone had asked me what it was that I wanted out of a live show starring a bunch of Marvel Characters, I would've given all the standard answers like big fights and special effects, but I would've also specifically requested that they find a way to throw in dirtbikes and skateboard tricks. I mean, those are my favorite things, but I would know, even as I was asking, that it probably wouldn't happen.
And yet, here we are with a new video about the upcoming Marvel Universe LIVE! arena show, and there are dirtbikes and skateboards. Like, there is actually a halfpipe and a dude straight up doing a Boneless. And, I guess, there's also some cool special effects and a teaser that characters like Captain Marvel and Black Cat will be showing up, but really: dirtbikes and skateboards.
If you're heading to the Marvel Universe LIVE! show when it kicks off an arena tour this summer but don't want to be lost in all the movie sequel action and dirtbike stunts, I have some good news! There's going to be a comic book tie-in to the show that will serve as a prequel, giving the modern theatergoer a chance to catch up on what's going on with the Cosmic Cube, the Avengers and Spider-Man before they hit the stage. Of course, while this is meant to answer questions, it also raises a few of its own. Namely:
1) Wait, there's going to be a live Marvel arena show?
2) Wait, it's going to involve dirtbike stunts?!
This summer, Marvel and Feld Entertainment are starting up a traveling arena show full of superheroes doing stunts that have never been done before dubbed Marvel Universe Live. It's a tall order.
But it looks like they're pretty close to being ready. USA Today snagged a video preview of the tour, which starts in Tampa July 10 and comes to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for its world premiere August 13, and you can watch it after the jump.
Get your wealth of Wednesday links after the cut.
From the looks of it, Marvel and Feld Entertainment's new Marvel Universe Live stage show is going to be more than just people in costumes singing and dancing. There's going to be some serious stunt work in this show, from what they're promising is a huge cast of characters.
Check out the two teaser trailers -- one that shows a bunch of stunt stuff (kickflips! BMX ramps!) and concept art, another that teases the Cosmic Cube and...I think Loki -- after the jump!
