Ask Chris #248: The Zero Effect; Is Mister Freeze the Best Example of Villain Reinvention?

Ask Chris #248, background art by Bruce Timm

Q: Has there ever been a more notable or successful reinvention of a villain than the transition from Mr. Zero to Mister Freeze? -- @spacetimeboss

A: Friend, you are not kidding about Mr. Freeze. As much as heroes and villains change over the years, and as much as they have to change to stay relevant as hundreds of creators work on their ongoing stories, I honestly don't know if there's any bad guy who made a change that dramatic, both in terms of theme and quality. He goes from being a one-note crook with an ice gun to one of the most compelling and tragic figures in Batman's entire Rogues Gallery. I'd even go as far as saying that aside from Two-Face, he's the easiest of the major villains to sympathize with --- and he probably works in a whole lot more stories besides.

On The Cheap: The 50-Page ‘Batman Adventures Holiday Special’ Is 99 Cents This Week

Batman Adventures Holiday Special, DC Comics

When San Diego rolls around next week, it'll be time once again for the Eisner Awards, the comics industry's second-most prestigious honor. The first, of course, is our own ComicsAlliance Memorial Awards, but for some reason, those don't get the press that the Eisners do. Go figure. Point is, DC is celebrating the occasion with a digital sale this week that seems like it's designed to remind you that they've put out a lot of award-winning comics over the past decade. But as always, that comes with an interesting problem, although it's not the one that we usually have when it comes to sifting through the dollar-book sales: In this case, it's pretty likely that you already have this stuff.

I mean, look, if you're the one person still waiting on a price drop to grab All Star Superman, then by all means, get over there, drop the twelve bucks and come back when you want to talk about how great that Jimmy Olsen issue is, but I suspect that if you're reading comics news online, then you probably already have Watchmen in one form or another. There is, however, one title, buried way at the end of the list, and if you don't have it already, it's one you need to pick up: 1994's Batman Adventures Holiday Special.

Batgirl Takes The A.L.S. Ice Bucket Challenge (With A Very Special Guest)

Ice01

Since you are reading this on the Internet, I'm going to go ahead and assume that you're already familiar with the Ice Bucket Challenge, wherein folks are being nominated by friends, fans and colleagues to dump buckets of freezing cold water on their heads on camera to raise awareness of (and money to combat) ALS, a neurodegenerative disease that attacks the brain and spinal cord -- or Lou Gehrig's Disease, as it is popularly known. Over the past few weeks, we've seen plenty of famous folks taking the challenge, but now, it has busted right through the Fourth Wal, and all the way to Gotham City's Burnside neighborhood.

This particular challenge was issued by Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart and Babs Tarr, the creative team for the revamp of Batgirl, and the challengee is Barbara Gordon herself, who seems set on finding out just how helpful that new jacket is going to be in fighting off the cold.

Check Out The First Half-Hour Of The New ‘Arkham Origins’ DLC, ‘Cold, Cold Heart’ [Video]

Batman Arkham Origins Cold Cold Heart DLC

Remember how a big chunk of the game map was frozen and icy in Arkham City? The new DLC for Batman: Arkham Origins"Cold, Cold Heart" extends that idea a bit, with the ice seemingly extending throughout the city as Penguin and Mr. Freeze terrorize the landscape on PS3, Xbox 360 and PC (but not the Wii) on April 22.

A leaked video reveals the first half hour of the DLC, the first Arkham DLC that actually adds single-player, storyline-driven gameplay instead of challenge packs and multiplayer maps. Much of it takes place in Wayne Manor as Bruce Wayne charges to the Batcave to pick up his batsuit. (Another toyetic iceproof costume shows up later.)
