This Magazine Kills Fascists: Green Arrow Vs. The Establishment
This Magazine Kills Fascists looks at times that comic books and superheroes have dealt with tyrannical, corrupt and outright fascist world leaders — not because we think we can find a solution, but because art can provide inspiration in the face of oppression. So far, this feature has focused on big villains, big world-altering plans, and how they reflect what's going on in the world today, but this week we're going to talk about a superhero comic being published right now that takes a stand against all that from a ground level. The current Green Arrow series, relaunched as part of DC Rebirth, is a rare superhero comic that challenges authority and addresses real world concerns of corruption, violence, and the exploitation of citizens by the moneyed elite.

Benjamin Percy's work on the newest volume of Green Arrow, along with artists Otto Schmidt, Juan Ferreyra and Stephen Byrne, has revitalized the character into one of the most exciting heroes in the DC Universe and made his eponymous title one of the standout comics from DC's Rebirth initiative. Next month, Oliver Queen journeys back to the island where he first became Green Arrow, and he's bringing Black Canary with him. Ahead of the release of Green Arrow #8, DC Comics has provided a first look at the pages, as well as a variant cover by comics legend Neal Adams.

DC Comics hosted a special livestream event at WonderCon in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon to unveil the creative teams behind its DC Rebirth event, which relaunches the entire DC Universe line with new issue #1s and multiple double-shipping titles. The relaunch will set the future course of DC Comics at a time when fans are wondering whether the company will embrace a new and diversifying audience or double down on serving a shrinking core audience. The event was introduced by DC All Access host Tiffany Smith, with DC co-publishers Jim Lee and Dan DiDio and chief creative officer and Rebirth chief architect Geoff Johns introducing and interviewing the creative teams as they joined them on stage at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Marvel unveiled its July variant cover theme at C2E2 this past weekend, and the pictures definitely tell a story. As a follow-up to March's "Women of Power" covers, which highlighted the strength of Marvel's heroic women, the July covers are dubbed "Mighty Men of Marvel." While "covers with men on them" might seem like an unremarkable theme, given that it describes most Marvel covers already, it's clear from the art released thus far that the concept was meant to be more bold than that --- but it's equally clear that Marvel missed its target.

We make a regular practice at ComicsAlliance of spotlighting particular artists or specific bodies of work, as well as the special qualities of comic book storytelling, but because cartoonists, illustrators and their fans share countless numbers of great pinups, fan art and other illustrations on sites like Flickr, Tumblr, DeviantArt and seemingly infinite art blogs that we’ve created Best Art Ever (This Week), a weekly depository for just some of the pieces of especially compelling artwork that we come across in our regular travels across the Web. Some of it’s new, some of it’s old, some of it’s created by working professionals, some of it’s created by future stars, some of it’s created by talented fans, awnd some of it’s endearingly silly. All of it is awesome.
