‘X-O Manowar’ #50 Features Art by Colleen Doran and Many More [Preview]

XO_050_FEATURED

Legendary comics artist Colleen Doran is contributing a gorgeous variant cover to the landmark 50th issue of Valiant's X-O Manowar. Her cover, seen above, is an homage to Michelangelo's sculpture The Pietà, with the titular armor in place of Jesus Christ. The mix of sci fi and Celtic fantasy imagery (not to mention the androgynous white-haired figure), while appropriate for X-O Manowar, is also reminiscent of Doran's own magnum opus, A Distant Soil.

Leonardo Leads the Charge for Sideshow’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Statue Series

Sideshow Collectibles
Sideshow Collectibles

A little over a month ago, Sideshow Collectibles announced a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles print based on a gauche painting by artist Paolo Rivera. The company teased there would be some statues to go along with it eventually, and today we have our first official look at the new line of four pieces inspired by Rivera's work. If you were wondering if they'd be able to capture the detail and style, these first prototype images sure make it look like they will.

Things kick of with Leonardo, who is captured perched on a sewage pipe ready to lead the rest of the Turtles into battle with whatever poor soul dared venture beneath the New York City streets. While not based on any particular incarnation of the Turtles, Rivera's own interpretation looks terrific in sculpted form.

Class Up Your Sewer Walls With Paolo Rivera’s ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Print From Sideshow

TMNT print by Paolo Rivera

You could probably be forgiven for thinking that Sideshow's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles "Premium Art Print" wasn't that big a deal. I mean, given that Sideshow is mostly known for their high-end action figures and collectibles, I spent the first few minutes after I saw this thing wondering why they were charging a hundred bucks for a photograph of a bunch of statues.

But then I realized that it's not a photo at all, and is actually a brand new piece of art by the truly amazing Paolo Rivera, printed from an original oil painting. Check it out below!

Art of Color: Javier Rodriguez, Color Chameleon

artofcolor-rodriguez

Javier Rodriguez's coloring work first came to my attention during his work on Daredevil, alongside Mark Waid and Paolo Rivera. It's interesting that a comic starring a blind superhero should have such vibrant, noticeable colors, but Rodriguez's work refuses to be ignored.

Best Comic Books Ever (This Week) – New Releases For March 25, 2015

CA_BestComics_0324

The question most often asked of the ComicsAlliance staff is a variation of, "Which comic books should I be reading?" or, "I'm new to comics, what's a good place to start?" The Wednesday deluge of new comic books, graphic novels and collected editions can be daunting even for the longtime reader, much less for those totally unfamiliar with creators, characters and publishers, and the dark mysteries of comic book shopping like variants, pre-ordering, and formats.

Paolo & Joe Rivera Draw The Hell Out Of ‘The Valiant’ #3 [Preview]

Valiant00

When the Valiant Universe returned a few years back with some of the most entertaining and engaging superhero comics on the stands, I think we all knew that it was only a matter of time before some world-shaking calamity brought a bunch of the heroes together in a big ol' crossover event. That's exactly what's happening in the form of The Valiant, in which Ninjak and other, less important heroes are gathering to prevent a scary monster from plunging the world into a new dark age.

It's pretty exciting stuff -- five years ago, I don't think any of us would've expected to see a big superhero event comic written by Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt -- but the biggest draw for me is the art team of Paolo Rivera and Joe Rivera. Thanks to his work on books like Amazing Spider-Man and Daredevil, Paolo Rivera is easily one of the best artists in comics today -- and when he draws Bloodshot kicking the living crap out of a door, it looks amazing. Check it out in an unlettered preview below!

We make a regular practice at ComicsAlliance of spotlighting particular artists or specific bodies of work, as well as the special qualities of comic book storytelling, but because cartoonists, illustrators and their fans share countless numbers of great pinups, fan art and other illustrations on sites like Flickr, Tumblr, DeviantArt and seemingly infinite art blogs that we’ve created Best Art Ever (This Week), a weekly depository for just some of the pieces of especially compelling artwork that we come across in our regular travels across the Web. Some of it’s new, some of it’s old, some of it’s created by working professionals, some of it’s created by future stars, some of it’s created by talented fans, awnd some of it’s endearingly silly. All of it is awesome.
