Basic cable broadcaster WGN America has picked up the rights to Jason Aaron and R.M. Guéra's Vertigo series Scalped and placed a pilot order for a live action adaptation. Scalped takes place on and around a Native American reservation, and centers on Dashiell “Dash” Bad Horse, an Army veteran who returns home to confront the crime and corruption that has engulfed "the Rez."
A great comic book cover is an advertisement, a work of art, a statement, and an invitation. A great comic book cover is a glimpse of another world through a canvas no bigger than a window pane. September's covers include masterclass composition from Genndy Tarkakovsky and Noelle Stevenson, some beautiful uses of light, color, and contrast, and some very different portraits of gods, old and new.
R.M. Guera may be one of the more under appreciated artists in comics. Guera's gritty, European-influenced line work is ideal for his recent work on the comic adaptation of Django Unchained, as well as his most notable series, the award winning Scalped, which he co-created with Jason Aaron for Vertigo. And if you asked me what artist, who had previously never illustrated a Judge Dredd story, was best suited to offer his take on Mega-City One's top cop, Guera would have been one of the first names to come to mind.
So while it isn't a surprise, it's certainly welcome news that Guera will be illustrating a Judge Dredd short story, written by Rob Williams, in the pages of 2000 AD.
The fan-favorite FX biker series Sons of Anarchy will soon speed off the small-screen and onto the paneled page.
Reginald Hudlin has worn a lot of hats. He's been a producer, comic writer, and director, amongst other work. The last twelve months offered readers a wide variety of work ranging from the most crowd-pleasing superhero epics to the most idiosyncratic of indies; the return of much missed mangaka and the emergence of exciting new talent; a new crowd-sponsored visibility for self-publishing; and the ascension of the fan artist from bedroom dreamer to Tumblr tycoon...
On shelves in comic shops today is Scalped #60, the final issue of the critically acclaimed Vertigo series. Created by Jason Aaron and artist R.M. Guera, Scalped takes place in Prairie Rose, a fictional Indian Reservation in South Dakota...
Of all the news to come out of Comic-Con last month, word that Jason Aaron and R.M. Guéra's Vertigo crime series Scalped would end in October with issue #60 stood out as a serious bummer amid some otherwise very cool announcements, including that Aaron is set to helm Incredible Hulk at Marvel starting in October.
