The Making Of A Modern Fantasy In 'Birthright'

The Making Of A Modern Fantasy In 'Birthright'
It’s Fantasy Week here at ComicsAlliance, but I’ve got a confession to make: I find it hard to get into fantasy stories. I often struggle to connect with their conflicts and invest in their struggles without a grounding in something real and a representation of something I can recognize as true. I hate to say it, but I need more than elves, dwarves and orcs to commit to a fantasy story. Skybound’s Birthright manages to take classic fantasy tropes and tell a very real and very human story across two worlds. In a very modern portrayal of the genre, Joshua Williamson, Andrei Bressan, Adriano Lucas and Pat Brosseau have established a fantasy world with something very real to say about our own.

Robert Kirkman, Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker's Invincible has been going strong for over thirteen years with relatively little disruption and almost no major creative team changes, a rarity in modern comics. However, today in a blog post Kirkman announced that Invincible will in fact be ending, and the creative team is set to bring the series to a close next year with Invincible #144.

Robert Kirkman's concepts seem to be doing fairly okay for themselves right now, with The Walking Dead leading the way to two of the most popular shows in the world, and the small-screen debut of Outcast just around the corner. His latest project for his Image imprint Skybound is a new miniseries developed alongside Marc Silvestri that will be written and drawn by two of comics fastest rising stars. Demonic is about a New York City police officer who is an upstanding family man, great colleague, and stellar employee, who also happens to house a demon within his body that, if given its way, would break free and slaughter everyone in New York City. Written by Christopher Sebela with art by Niko Walter and Dan Brown, Demonic is set for release via Skybound later this year.

Keatinge & Randolph On The Resurrection Of 'Tech Jacket'
This week Image Comics released the first issue of Tech Jacket by Joe Keatinge and Khary Randolph. And while this may be the first time many of today's readers have heard of the title, it's actually been lurking around the edges of the Image line for over a decade. Created in 2002 by pre-Walking-Dead Robert Kirkman and artist E.J. Su, the eponymous Tech Jacket is a wearable cache of the most powerful weapons in the universe, bestowed irreversibly unto teenager Zack Thompson when he encountered a dying alien. Naturally, Zack used his newfound abilities to become a galactic warrior of great worth and protecting Earth from universal threats with more enthusiasm and wide-eyed wonder than other Earthborn space cops you might have heard of. The original series ran for only six issues but the story was later continued as a back-up in the pages of Kirkman and Ryan Ottley's Invincible. Then, earlier this year, Keatinge and Randolph produced a trio of digital issues that revitalized the concepts and characters and paved the way for this new ongoing series. With issue #1 on sale now from Image and Kirkman's Skybound imprint, ComicsAlliance spoke to the creative team about what drew them to these characters and concepts, and what plans they have in store for the series.

And now the writer is returning to the genre, as today Kirkman announced Outcast, a horror comic about exorcism and demonic possession, to be
