Early reviews of X-Men: Apocalypse haven’t been particularly welcoming, even as the nine-film franchise seemingly skews closer and closer to the colorful weirdness of its comic heyday. Many a fan jump right back to the ‘90s X-Men: The Animated Series (and its inimitable theme) as a pinnacle of X-nostalgia, now appropriately given the “Honest Trailer” treatment just in time for the movie!

ScreenJunkies served an optic blast from a pro to the 90's FOX take on Marvel’s uncanny mutants, the latest TV target of its signature parody after a second round of Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones, Entourage and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Apart from its standing as one of the better superhero animations ever (second only to Batman: The Animated Series), X-Men earns at least a few potshots for its choppy animation in later years, broad stereotypes and some oddly-titillating voice work for Jean Grey.

You may not have thought about it at the time (nor exactly how often Jean and Scott called out to one another, or Storm narrated her own abilities), but boy ever, will you notice now.

In the meantime, X-Men: Apocalypse will hit theaters this week, with its inevitable sequel likely bringing us full-circle back to the ‘90s.
