One of the early comic book successes of the Kickstarter crowd funding platform was Fairy Quest: Outlaws, the first in a planned series of short graphic novels created by industry veterans Paul Jenkins and Humberto Ramos. The pair, who'd collaborated previously on a popular run of Marvel Comics' Spectacular Spider-Man, proposed a lavishly illustrated story about a world where fairy tale characters like Little Red Riding Hood exist only to replay their famous legends again and again, like a kind of job, and where any deviation is punished with a citation from a Grimm authority. Unhappy with the state of affairs, a group of characters decide to abandon this world for ours. Backers funded Fairy Quest to the impressive tune of $95,000, ensuring future volumes. The first 48-page hardcover collection is now available from Ramos and Jenkins directly for the price of $29.95.

If you're a fan of these creators and/or curious about this quirky take on the fantasy genre but do not wish to take the 30-dollar hardcover plunge, BOOM! Studios has made a deal to serialize Fairy Quest in standard periodical format beginning in February. The first graphic novel will be split into a two-issue limited series at $3.99 an issue.
