Warner Bros. has been steadily producing a whole lot of direct-to-video animated movies about DC Comics over the past few years, and while a lot of them have been adaptations of existing stories, there are a few original storylines mixed in there as well. The latest project, Justice League: Gods and Monsters is one of those, and it's got something that should make even the most jaded viewer a little interested: Bruce Timm, the animator best known for being one of the creators of Batman: The Animated Series.

Now, we're getting a look at what we can expect in the movie courtesy of Machinima's Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles, a web series coming out in advance of the movie that's set to reveal the project's much darker version of the Justice League. You can check out the trailer above, and if that whets your appetite you can see the first installment below. Both the episode and the ad for the episode contain another, smaller ad for a car, but adception aside, it's worth a look.

The idea of a darker and more villainous Justice League is one that we've seen a lot from DC in recent years, but this one certainly benefits from Timm's presence and the interesting designs he's got for a militaristic Superman --- who in this reality is the son of General Zod rather than Jor-El --- and a Wonder Woman who looks like she hails from Jack Kirby's Fourth World rather than Greek Mythology.

Of course, it also looks like Timm is trying to set his project apart by going pretty dark with it. That's to be expected when you're dealing with bad guys, of course, but Harley Quinn swinging around a chainsaw surrounded by the dead bodies of a family that have Joker smiles carved into their corpses? That is pretty grim.

The Chronicles series debuts on Machinima today, June 8, with the Gods and Monsters movie set for release on July 28.
