So you've decided to read about Batman! I would definitely applaud this decision, as I have spent the majority of the past thirty years doing exactly that, but I also know that it can be pretty daunting to figure out where to get started. There have, after all, been thousands of Batman stories published since he first debuted from Bill Finger and Bob Kane in 1939, and despite a few missteps along the way, he probably has more classic and definitive stories in print than any other superhero.

But don't worry, ComicsAlliance is here to help with a list of ten essential Batman stories. Read these, and you'll (hopefully) come away with a solid foundation for understanding the Dark Knight and how he works.

It's worth noting, of course, that a list of only ten Batman stories --- any ten Batman stories --- is only really scratching the surface of what the character has to offer. I love that guy enough that I could do a list of fifty, or a list of ten that were just from the 2010s, but again, most of those would require, or at least benefit from, a reader who was coming to the table with a solid understanding of the character.

With that in mind, the stories I selected for the list are meant to form a basis, and while I certainly think that all of them are very, very good, the purpose of the list isn't to give readers the best stories, or even my personal favorites. It's to provide that foundation.

So that said, if you're an experienced Batman reader, you might not find a lot of new stuff here. If, however, you're new, then you're in for some pretty good reading.
