Everyone loves comic book trivia, but with 75 years of superhero comics behind us right now, there’s always some new obscure fact to learn. That’s why ComicsAlliance is going deep into the minutiae of your favorite characters in our new video series. You think you know comics? Well here’s a few things you might not know!

With the Justice League of America on its way to theaters as a result of some cruel Monkey’s Paw wish, this week finds us going back into the history of DC Comics’ pre-eminent super-team to rustle up some strange facts about their origin! Find out about their first foes, their weird headquarters, how they were almost brought down by a teen who snapped his fingers a lot, and the strange connections between the JLA, major league baseball and Sailor Moon!

Show Notes:

  • Even though their first appearance was in Brave and the Bold #28, the origin of the Justice League (with the Appelaxians) wasn’t told until Justice League of America #9. It’s the one where Wonder Woman gets turned into a tree on the cover.
  • For a modern update of the origin story, definitely read Mark Waid, Brian Augustyn and Barry Kitson‘s JLA: Year One. Similarly, Tom Peyer and Rags Morales did a great update of the John Dough story in Hourman.
  • Martian Manhunter’s Takeuchi-inspired disguise appears in the pages of JLA #27, by Mark Millar and Mark Pajarillo.
