Perhaps best known for her role as Vesper Lynd in the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale, French actress and supermodel Eva Green has been cast to play the titular Ava Lord in Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Based on the classic graphic novel by Frank Miller, the film is a sequel to the 2005 Sin City film co-directed by Miller and Robert Rodriguez.

SPOILER WARNING: The following is basically the whole plot of the book.

Originally serialized from 1993-1994 and now available as a complete graphic novel, A Dame To Kill For remains one of the grimmest and bloodiest tales of the Sin City canon. The story stars antihero Dwight, played in this film by Josh Brolin. The eponymous "dame" is Ava (Eva Green), an old flame who's now married to a depraved millionaire. Ava begs Dwight to take her back, and when he sees her menaced by her husband's brutish bodyguard, Dwight's compelled to rescue her. Hooking up with the invincible Marv (Mickey Rourke in the first film), Dwight raids the luxurious home of Ava's cruel husband, confronts him and kills him.

Sadly, it turns out that the whole thing was a setup orchestrated by Ava to drive her foolish ex Dwight into killing her gross husband so she could inherit his fortune! Ava proceeds to shoot Dwight a few million times, including once in the head, and leaves him a bloody mess in the street before telling the cops that he's a crazy jealous murderer who dispatched her beloved husband in cold blood. Also she sleeps with one of the cops. Dwight's nursed back to health by his other ex, the dominatrix Gail (played by Rosario Dawson), whose army of "Old Town girls" (prostitutes) includes plastic surgeons who provide Dwight with a new face (Clive Owen, as seen in the first Sin City film, which takes place after this new one). After he's recovered, Dwight teams up with Old Town's resident ninja protector Miho (played by Devon Aoki in the first film, Jamie Chung in this new one) to revenge himself upon Ava.

Given the enormous amount of pure noir nastiness in the story, it's imperative that filmmakers identify the right leading lady. Angelina Jolie was rumored to be the filmmakers' first choice for many years, but Miller and Rodriguez finally found their Ava, whose casting they talked about in a press release from Dimension Films:

"We've been wanting to tell this story for a very long time. Ava Lord is one of the most deadly and fascinating residents of Sin City. From the start, we knew that the actor would need to be able to embody the multifaceted characteristics of this femme fatale and we found that in Eva Green. We are ecstatic that Eva is joining us."

Green joins a cast that already boasts Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson and Jamie King reprising their roles from the firstSin City film. In addition to Green, Brolin and Chung, other newcomers to the series include Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Dennis Haysbert.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For will be one of two Frank Miller-inspired films in which Green will appear in 2013. She's also set to star in 300: Rise of an Empire, the sequel to Miller and Zack Snyder's hit 300.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is currently scheduled to open October 4.
