My Little Pony Friendship is Magic

Big In The Marines: Artist Andy Price On ‘My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic’ [Interview]

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, IDW

Andy Price has brought joy to licensed comics. His work on IDW’s My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic necessarily follows the established look of the animated TV series, but Price's playfulness and skill enliven every page: imaginative lettering, dramatically lit villains, too many background gags to count. The most recently completed arc of the series, 'Reflections,' encompasses an alternate universe, doomed love, some truly intense crosshatching, and a general willingness to play with the characters in a way licensed comics typically avoid.

Along with writer Katie Cook, Price has developed Hasbro’s land of pastel ponies into something a little wilder and a little weirder, yet ensured that it remains enormously compelling to kids and adults alike. ComicsAlliance sat down with Price at San Diego Comic-Con to discuss how he and Cook pulled this off, his thoughts on Brony fandom, and, of course, his pick for best pony.

Hire This Woman: Writer Heather Nuhfer

Untitled-1

In the overwhelmingly male comic book industry, it has been a challenge for some editors and readers to see the ever growing number of talented women currently trying to make a name for themselves. With that in mind, ComicsAlliance offers Hire This Woman, a recurring feature designed for comics readers as well as editors and other professionals, where we shine the spotlight on a female comics pro on the ascendance. Some of these women will be at the very beginning of their careers, while others will be more experienced but not yet “household names.”

Busy writer Heather Nuhfer has worked on all-ages properties such as Fraggle Rock, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and Strawberry Shortcake. She's also written The Simpsons and Vampire Diaries comics.

MLP 19 Preview
IDW

Those of you who haven't kept up with IDW's My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic comic may not be aware of this, but the junk has gotten real over the last few issues. In the latest story arc by CA favorites Katie Cook and Andy Price, everyone's favorite ponies have found themselves in a Star Trek style parallel universe, where the good guys are bad, Applejack is a member of the pony Mafia, and Princess Celestia is eeeeeeeeevil.

But those aren't the only revelations they're providing. This week's My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #19 also explores the rarely seen past of (good) Celestia, in that shady period of time between exiling her sister to the moon and taking Twilight Sparkle as her student.

My Little Pony #16, IDW

Since you're reading this on the Internet, I'm going to go ahead and assume that there's a significant chance you've wondered what Star Trek would be like if the Enterprise was crewed by Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle instead of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. Well wonder no longer, friends and neighbors! In this week's My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #16, Heather Nuhfer and Amy Mebberson are answering your crossover queries once and for all.

Trapped in a storybook with the actual stories devoured by the magical Bookworm, the Ponies are forced to make up their own stories, and so naturally, they turn to recreating Star Trek and Lord of the Rings. Apparently fanfic is magic, too. Check 'em out below!

The Gang Learns Reading Is Fun And Potentially Life-Threatening In ‘My Little Pony’ #15 [Preview]

My Little Pony #15, IDW

It wasn't that long ago that the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic animated series did an episode all about the joys of reading. It's a good lesson for the kids, but it does raise an interesting question about just where you go with literary themes once that's done -- especially in the MLP comic, which is presumably already being read by children who enjoy, you know, reading. Well, if you're Heather Nuhfer, Amy Mebberson and Heather Breckel, then the answer is simple: You tell a story all about how the joy of reading presents its own life-threatening (but fun and adventurous) dangers!

Yo Ho, Yo Ho, A Pirate’s Life For ‘My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic’ #13 [Preview]

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic #13, IDW

As you can probably tell from the title, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is pretty heavily based around, well, friendship. Being nice to each other, supporting their fellow ponies through the tough times, sharing common interests and overall kindness. So, you know, what better way to express those ideas of friendship and togetherness than by ditching Ponyville and heading out to the high seas for a life of lawless pillaging under as pirates!

That's the premise of Heather Nuhfer and Brenda Hickey's story in MLP:FiM #13, where everyone's favorite Equestrians join up with Hoofbeard the Pirate for an all-new buccaneer adventure. We only have the first few pages, but from what I've seen so far, I'm fully expecting it to mirror the plot of Assassins Creed IV, right down to someone air-assassinating an ocelot. Check it out below!
