Andrew Garfield Describes Studio Meddling Behind ‘Amazing Spider-Man 2′

AmazingSpiderMan2

The critical and popular consensus on this summer's Amazing Spider-Man 2 was that it was, to put it diplomatically, underwhelming.

As The Daily Beast's Marlow Stern put it, the movie felt overstuffed and "like a setup film for The Sinister Six spin-off." In fact, he put it that way directly to actor Andrew Garfield, who has played Peter Parker in the last two Spidey flicks. Garfield defended the movie to a point, but he also laid any blame for its failures solely on the studio behind it, Sony.

Garfield01

If you're like me and the sight of Jimmy Fallon pulling out an acoustic guitar fills you with a vague sense of dread, you may want to look away. Don't worry, though! It turns out okay! See, Andrew Garfield, who stars as the title role of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, has been learning how to play guitar, and in a segment on The Tonight Show, Fallon offers one up so that Garfield can make his public debut as a musician.

His song of choice? The rollicking theme from the classic Spider-Man cartoon. And then he's joined by The Roots. It's pretty awesome.

McDonald’s Offers Up Gendered ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ Happy Meal Toys, So You Can Finally Have That Hot Pink Spidey Purse You Wanted

McDonald's Spider-Man Toys For Girls

The release of a major superhero movie is pretty much always accompanied by a fast food tie-in. Even the relatively complex, morally challenging Dark Knight had that pizza with triple pepperoni from Dominos, so it's pretty obvious that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is going to be going all out. And they have, with a promotional tie-in with McDonald's that includes Happy Meal toys. The thing is, the ASM2 Happy Meal toys come in two distinct forms: Cars, masks and action figures for the boys, and bracelets, purses and journals for the girls. You know, for their feelings.

You're f**kin' up, McD's.

Amazing Spider-Man Cinematic Universe

“We are going to access Marvel’s full world of Spider-Man characters, so be on the lookout for new heroes and villains.” Those were Sony Pictures co-chair Amy Pascal's words of reassurance to investors during a media conference call last week.

It's no surprise to hear that Sony has big plans for its Spider-Man movie franchise. Amazing Spider-Man 2 hits theatres in May 2014 with Andrew Garfield reprising his role as Peter Parker, and further installments are planned for 2016 and 2018. But the success of Marvel's own "cinematic universe" makes the expansion of Sony's Spider-Man universe seem inevitable, which leads to the question: where might Sony take the franchise next?
