With New York Comic-Con coming up this weekend, many publishers are saving up their big announcements for the Javits Center. IDW Publishing, however, has decided to get the jump on everyone by releasing their first big announcement a few days early, and it's one that we're definitely looking forward to. Following on the success of Super Secret Crisis War, the Cartoon Network crossover event, IDW has announced Powerpuff Girls Super Smash-Up, a new ongoing series that will team Townsville's favorite heroines up with Cartoon Network shows like Dexter's Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Johnny Bravo and more -- and the series will be written and drawn by Derek Charm.
To find out more about the series, scheduled to kick off this January, we spoke to Charm about more about the premise of the series, which characters we can look forward to, and whether the Talking Dog will finally get his starring role.
I watched a lot of Cartoon Network in the '90s (and the 2000s, and the 2010s, but that's beside the point), and I distinctly remember thinking that if there was one thing that could really improve shows like Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack and Dexter's Laboratory, it would be throwing all the characters together into one big fight against robots, preferably while hanging out at San Diego's Comic-Con International.
Fortunately for me, my dreams have once again made reality thanks to Derek Charm's variant cover for IDW's upcoming Cartoon Network crossover, Super Secret Crisis War! Not only will the series tell the tale of a crossover between the shows' heroes and villlains written by Charm and legendary writer Louise Simonson with art by Charm, but there's a SDCC variant cover featuring characters from the shows engaging in that most time-honored Comic-Con tradition: Cosplay! When the evil Aku, Vilgax, Mandark and Mojo Jojo join forces in an axis of awfulness, their respective nemeses are going to have to team up to stop them, right?
That's the idea behind IDW's new series Super Secret Crisis War, which brings together Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory; Samurai Jack; The Powerpuff Girls; Ben 10, and Ed, Edd and Eddy to form a super-team of characters with different skills, backgrounds and art styles. The six-issue event, written by Louise Simonson and with art by Derek Charm, starts in June.
I don't think the renewed interest in Cartoon Network's '90s jams could be any more welcome than it already is, but today, IDW has stepped up their game by giving us the crossover we've always dreamed of... sort of. For their retailer incentive cover of the upcoming Dexter's Laboratory #1, artist Derek Charm has drawn up the historic meeting between everyone's favorite pint-sized, inexplicably accented mad scientist and the Powerpuff Girls.
Obviously, the girls are no stranger to labs, having been born of an experiment involving the mysterious Chemical X. Still, unless you count that one Cartoon Network promo from the '90s where everyone goes to the movies, I'm pretty sure this is the first time they've hung out. When DC brought its long-running catch-all Cartoon Network comic to an end last spring, it seemed like the cable station's premiere properties were destined for comics limbo. With Adventure Time and Regular Show at Boom!, assorted Adult Swim shows li
