Death Dealers And Destroyers: A Tribute To Frank Frazetta
When you think of fantasy art, and in particular of the kind of paintings that have long been a mainstay on the covers of mass market paperbacks, you're either thinking of Frank Frazetta or someone who was directly influenced by his work. Featuring violent barbarians, scantily clad sorceresses, and armies of ogres, Frazetta's art is the very definition of fantasy artwork, because it was his work in the 1960s and '70s that redefined it. Every artist, and particularly every painter, who has dabbled in Sword and Sorcery illustration in the last fifty years is either drawing on Frazetta or reacting against him.

If you're into Conan the Barbarian, Lord of the Rings, or the music of 1970s southern rock band Molly Hatchet, then odds are pretty good that you're also a fan of Frank Frazetta. In a career that spanned six decades, he was was one of the greatest and most prominent fantasy artists, providing some of the most iconic images of the sword-and-sorcery genre --- including a beautifully painted cover for the Conan story Rogues in the House, in which Conan wrestles a gorilla that thinks it's a wizard. For collectors, Frazetta's original art has been a little difficult to come by, usually being sold through private sales. On December 11, however, the largest collection of Frazetta's artwork ever to come to auction will be offered up by Profiles in History, featuring 80 original pieces including oil paintings, sketches, and more.

Have you longed for the day when Frank Frazetta's artwork would do more than live on the page? Does your sixth-scale collection lack the imposing threat of the Death Dealer? Friends, I have news for you that you may find welcome. Not only is Frank Frazetta's iconic executioner being remade as figures and statues, but so are a few other Frazetta classics from companies like Go Hero and ARH. What's more, they won't be alone. Plenty of comic characters that haven't gotten quite the same attention as Marvel's and DC's big guns will soon be able to stand side-by-side with Hot Toys' and Sideshow Collectibles' interpretations. You might recall Go Hero's name from a few months back. It's the company that helped Das Toyz bring the first Stan Lee sixth-scale figure to market (a new one is in development at Hot Toys now too because... reasons?). Though I'd never heard of Go Hero before, the company's showing at NYCC made me wish I had. The big name characters at larger publishers (particularly those with movies) tend to get the sixth-scale treatment from companies, but Go Hero's focus is on those that normally don't get a moment in the sun. Death Dealer probably hasn't seen a ray of light beyond a handful of collectibles over the years, but he'll have a figure from Go Hero soon enough.
