Wizards, Lizards And Other Figments Of Fancy: A Birthday Tribute To Vaughn Bode [NSFW]

EvanNorman_Bode1200

Vaughn Bodé is one of the few comics creators whose work transcends genre and style – his art can't be compared to anything but itself, and can really only be described and categorized as "Vaughn Bodé style". In his brief career, he redefined the very idea of what a cartoonist could be, pioneering a drawing style that inspired and confounded, blending and distorting fantasy tropes with every pen stroke. His stories were filled with spaced-out hallucinations and a direct, earthy sensuality, and established him as a guru of graphic storytelling and the first proper rock star of the comics field.

To mark the occasion of his birthday, ComicsAlliance reached out to a handful of our favorite modern-day artists to offer their takes on Bodé – his characters, his style, his feeling, and his inspiration.

Rapper Froggy Fresh Combines Predators, Power Rangers And Potato Snacks In A Potent Pop-Cultural Powerhouse Performance [Video]

Predators gotta Predat.

Rapper Froggy Fresh (formerly known as Krispy Kreme until a certain vendor of fried pastries told him he couldn't do that anymore) has released a music video that should certainly appeal to fans of Power Rangers, Predators getting kicked in the chest, and hip-hop. (In other words, probably the exact sort of person that reads ComicsAlliance.)

In "Street Rangers," Froggy Fresh and his best friend Mike discover a pair of Morphin' Watches and find themselves blessed with the ability to become super sentai sorts. Soon after, they come across a Predator bullying a kid at a playground, as Predators are apt to do when they're not destroying large sections of South American jungle or wreaking havoc in Los Angeles.

Wordburglar Releases ‘G.I. Joe’-Themed Hip Hop Album, Corrupts America’s Youth In The Name Of Cobra

Wordburglar, Welcome To Cobra Island

Believe it or not, I am the proud owner of multiple concept albums where rappers take on G.I. Joe-related personas and rap about how awesome Cobra Commander, Destro and the Baroness are. Seriously, I think if I get two or three more of these things, it will officially qualify as a subgenre. Cobracore, or maybe Wrist-Missle-Hop.

The latest? A brand new album from Wordburglar, rapping in character as Rap Viper (described as the Commander's chief operative in "indoctrinating the youth with Cobra propaganda") titled Welcome To Cobra Island. What's more, Wordburglar released a pretty awesome fan-film video with the album's lead track, featuring HISS Tanks, Rattlers and even Cobra Commander himself scratching on the ones and twos. Check it out below!
