Here's a badly kept secret about me: I love Shaquille O'Neal. Always have. I taste-tested every flavor of Soda Shaq, for crying out loud. Ask me to tell you about my never-written script for Caddy-Shaq someday.
Dark Horse comics editor Jim Gibbons and writer/artist Ethan Young clearly feel the same way. As a palate cleanser to cheer themselves up after collaborating on Young's amazing-looking but also emotionally draining graphic novel Nanjing the Burning City, the two teamed up for another, wholly different project in which the Shaq of 1993 is convinced by former Charlotte Hornet Larry Johnson in the guise of Grandmama (remember Grandmama?) to spring ahead to the year 2030 to challenge a mysterious dictator to a game of one-on-one for the fate of the world.
You thought the NCAA championship game was big? This is bigger.
Those of you who pay attention to such things may have been wondering just what our former senior editor Caleb Goellner has been up to since he left ComicsAlliance earlier this year. Personally, I would've guessed that he'd spent the last few months swimming in a Scrooge McDuckian bin of Power Rangers and Ninja Turtles action figures, but that is not the case. It turns out that he's been working on a new comic, alongside writer Jim Gibbons, the Eisner-winning editor of Dark Horse Presents.
The book is called Birchsquatch, and it is quite possibly the greatest sasquatch-based sci-fi revenge mystery of autumn 2014, and it's available now on Gumroad as a pay-what-you-want download.
2013 was a great year for comics. It feels like a similar statement is made after every year concludes, but 2013 unquestionably saw exceptional work from several creators, across multiple publishers and genres within the medium. To close out the year, we offered what we felt to be the best comics of the year, highlighting dozens of writers and artists whose creative output we felt deserved to be celebrated.
But now we want to hear from you. Readers often offer us their opinions, via the comment section or social media, as to what they’re enjoying, or what they think we missed. Now we’d like you to let us know with your vote, as this week we’re launching the first annual ComicsAlliance Reader Choice Awards. We’ll have two categories per day throughout the week, and you can vote more than once if you like, though you’ll have to wait an hour at least before coming back to vote again. Voting will be open until February 11 at 10 a.m. EST, and we’ll announce the winners shortly after.
You can cast your vote after the cut for the best editor of the year.
