With issue #12 coming out next week, The Woods has now traveled a third of the way through its proposed running-speed of 36 issues at Boom Studios. And already the cast of the series have had everything imaginable thrown at them --- from shadowy pus-monsters to angry faculty staff. From James Tynion, Michael Dialynas and Josan Gonzalez, this is a book that very clearly has a huge sense of scale hidden away behind the dark forest that surrounds the cast.

Starting off with the cheery premise "an entire school full of pupils is transported... somewhere strange," and quickly branching off into a series of different stories, the book has risen foremost on the breadth of its characterization. Each issue, the creative team take the various surviving groups of pupils and sets them up into making a series of impossible decisions as they attempt to survive against, well, everything.

Because everything is out to get them. It's a pretty intense comic at times.

As we head into the final issue of the book's first year --- and it's worth noting that the book has come out every month for a year under the same creative team --- things are hanging by various threads. Adrian, who has spent a lot of time as a surly, secretive leader for several of the kids, is having a particularly strange time. How strange? Well, Boom has kindly shared an exclusive preview of the next issue so we can all get a look at what's going on behind those sinister glasses...
