Gabriel Hardman’s Convention Portrait Project Makes ECCC 2014 Look All Kinds Of Classy [Art]

Convention portraits by Gabriel Hardman

A lot of artists hit conventions with a specific plan in mind for sketches, whether it's only drawing their signature character or sticking to a particular theme. Last weekend at Emerald City Comicon 2014, however, Gabriel Hardman took on a pretty fascinating project that I don't think I've seen anyone do before. In addition to his usual (and fantastic) convention sketches, Hardman launched the Convention Portrait Project, where he drew con-goers to get a little practice drawing from life.

We make a regular practice at ComicsAlliance of spotlighting particular artists or specific bodies of work, as well as the special qualities of comic book storytelling, but because cartoonists, illustrators and their fans share countless numbers of great pinups, fan art and other illustrations on sites like Flickr, Tumblr, DeviantArt and seemingly infinite art blogs that we’ve created Best Art Ever (This Week), a weekly depository for just some of the pieces of especially compelling artwork that we come across in our regular travels across the Web. Some of it’s new, some of it’s old, some of it’s created by working professionals, some of it’s created by future stars, some of it’s created by talented fans, awnd some of it’s endearingly silly. All of it is awesome.

The Complete Jack Kirby Character Sketchbook (Summer 2013)

Untitled-1

For the past few years, I've been taking a sketchbook to conventions across the country and getting pieces of art with a single theme: Characters created or co-created by the King of Comics, Jack Kirby. After 52 sketches, you'd think I'd be running out of characters, but with only a couple repeats, it's still going strong. Today, in honor of Kirby's 96th birthday, I'm putting all the sketches in one place to show some of the best artists working in comics celebrating Kirby's lasting legacy as a creator!

Gabriel Hardman & Corinna Bechko Bring Monster Sci-Fi Serial ‘Station To Station’ To ‘Dark Horse Presents’

untitled-1-1350928406

When you think about it, we're pretty lucky that Gabriel Hardman makes comics. My fellow sequential art and illustration admirers probably know his excellent work on Marvel books like Agents of Atlas, Hulk, Secret Avengers, and Incredible Hercules (among others), but Hardman's visions reach a much bigger number of people through his work as a storyboard artist on such popular films as Inception, The Dark Knight Rises, Superman Returns, Spider-Man 3, that awesome but aborted Kerry Conran pitch for John Carter of Mars... the list is impressive and very long. Film is a lucrative field, of

Before the film that became known as Disney's John Carter ended up in the doubtlessly capable hands of WALL-E and Finding Nemo director Andrew Stanton, the live-action adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' classic adventure hero was to be a Paramount Pictures production called John Carter of Mars, helmed by Kerry Conran, director of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. A demo reel that includes test special effects, some human performances and loads of beautiful conceptual image
