Boom! Studios has found success with a line of Adventure Time original graphic novels that's being published alongside the ongoing monthly comic, so it was only a matter of time before they expanded that strategy to include Regular Show as well. Now, we're just about to see the first full-color Regular Show graphic novel, Hydration, hitting shelves with a story of everyone's favorite raccoon and bluejay dealing with a heat wave that hits the park, sending them in search of a way to cool off. It's a simple idea, but under Rachel Connor and Tessa Stone, it turns into a sprawling adventure that's full of the magical realism and 8-bit video games that Regular Show fans have come to love.
To find out more, I spoke to Connor about the process of creating a story that would be longer and more complicated than any episode of the show, the strange twists that allowed it to expand to a full 155 pages, and why the Baby Ducks just had to make an appearance.
Terrifyingly, it's just a few weeks until Comic-Con International annexes most of downtown San Diego and with it, our souls. But with a new comics convention comes a new offering of exclusive stuff from BOOM! Studios. The publisher of the Adventure Time line of comics as well Lumberjanes and Bee and Puppycat and others is known among rarities collectors for its convention-only releases, and they'll be back at their booth with more at this year's San Diego Comic-Con. Check out the company's latest assortment of exclusives below, including the hardcover Mathematical Edition of Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens.
As the band Solid Bold so indelibly noted in their song "Summertime Loving, Loving In The Summer (Time)," "It's Summertime and you know what that means / Gonna head down to the beach, gonna do some beachy things."
One of those beachy things could be plopping down on the sand and reading a graphic novel about Regular Show...uh, regulars Mordecai and Rigby trying to figure out how and why a mysterious pool appeared in their park in the midst of a blistering heat wave. That's the premise of the new Boom! Studios graphic novel by Ed, Edd and Eddy writer Rachel Connor and artist Tessa Stone (Bravest Warriors). The beautiful cover above is by Allison Strejlau, artist on the monthly Regular Show series.
Humankind's understanding of sleep has come a long way in the year 3085, but even so, there's plenty of complexities to consider when navigating the Dream Dimension. That's the trouble Wallow faces in Bravest Warriors #16, which arrives in stores and on digital platforms from Boom! Studios on January 22nd. In a tale written by Tessa Stone and illustrated by Mike Holmes, Bravest Warriors team leader Chris is discovered to be the inadvertent host of an alien parasite known as a Dreamadon. Dreamadon? More like Drama-don! You can see what Wallow and Chris are up against -- along with BW covers by Tyson Hesse, Terry Blas, Jason Adams and Ian Bertram -- in our first-look at the issue, after the jump.
It looks like Beth of the Bravest Warriors may just prove herself the most relatable member of the team in next week's Boom! Studios issue. You see, in Bravest Warriors #15, the heroine comes across a box of her childhood toys. At first she contemplates cleaning house by donating them (a fine idea!), but then? She reminds herself why action figures perhaps the greatest technical/spiritual achievement in the history of humankind. Ryan Pequin makes it all clear in his "Childish Things" short by Whitney Cogar, followed by a "Food Court" tale by Coleman Engle and a "Danny Divided" story by Tessa Stone. Boom! has provided us with a first look at the issue, with fives full pages of Pequin's short. Click through and prepare to hold your action figures tight.
Anyone who has ever tuned in to the annual Scripps National Spelling Bee finals on ESPN in the spring have gotten a sense of just how hardcore kids can get when arranging letters into words, but imagine if Bees were bigger than football, basketball, soccer and every other pro sporting event combined? Writer Ananth Panagariya and artist Tessa Stone are taking readers to such a pace this December with their original graphic novel, Buzz!, which is due out in December from Oni Press. Readers don't have to worry about skimming the story like a textbook as they immediately meet Webster, a meek soon-to-be high school freshman who finds himself sucked into the seedier side of his world's magical realism-infused spelling scene and must fight to survive through bee after bee on his way to the top. ComicsAlliance reached out to Panagariya for his word on Buzz!. Click through for the full interview.
Though the title of Jeremy Sorese's Adventure Time#15 backup is "Give Us Back BMO," fans needn't worry about Finn and Jake going full Gibson in next week's issue - their sentient video game console pal/roommate isn't being held for ransom, after all. Unfortunately, it's ev
In January comic book and graphic novel publisher Oni Press will relaunch its website as a new webcomics hub, featuring free comics every week day. The material will include at least two brand new serials a week and a mixture of previously published comics. After the serials conclude they will be released in print as graphic novels. This long-in-the-works initiative was made official at Friday's Oni Press panel at New York Comic Con, where Editor-in-Chief James Lucas Jones spoke more about the publisher's new projects from creators including Cullen Bunn, Joëlle Jones, Joe Harris, Brian Churilla... and Chris Sims.
